THE VICTORY ELEPHANT
I made the comment in a prior post that with the election of Mr. Obama, America is finally what it always said it was.
What gets past me is why Republicans do not plug into that, recognize the goodwill that can be generated for them (think "party of Lincoln" here) and play up this "new day" for their own supporters? There is plenty of room on the victory elephant for all to ride here. There is just no reason for the kind of divisiveness we are permitting and even bringing upon ourselves.
Sure, conspiracy theories abound. The Obamacare rollout and website failure has some (and certainly me) wondering if there is sabotage from some quarter. It doesn't have to be from the Republicans, although some point the finger. After all, a healthcare meltdown means many Republican constituents won't be served, either. While Capital-region Republicans are often well-heeled, this is not so in other parts of the country, where many are as bereft as inner-city poor if not worse off, although for some reason no one is allowing them to make the connection so that they can better themselves instead of being afraid of the neighbors and being jacked around by disdainful leaders who aren't really helping them.
I actually wonder if the egg on Mr. Obama's face is partially due to the insurance industry not being on board. Who else has enough money to buy ineptitude and silence? Whoever mentioned that Amazon or other private sector big-traffic websites don't crash like the Obamacare website did got me thinking. As good as those websites are, shouldn't any website used by the Executive Branch be at least that good, if not better? And if the websites worked, Mr. Obama's plan could succeed or fail on its own.
But while we're buying into blame and conspiracies, we are inert when we should be devising strategies for taking care of ourselves while our institutions falter. Here in the Capital region, pointing to poop on the sidewalk instead of cleaning it up falls somewhere in the arena of "analysis" and "assessment" and often, progress stops there. The people may need to pick up the ball.
I think it's time for regular people like us to figure out ways to handle our business so we can stop being yanked around for nothing. I won't pretend to know what kind of poop scoop we need to carry as individuals to collectively clear our path.
I only know that, now that America is finally what it always said it was, no one can say they don't have a stake in it, and every individual needs to think about their future and taking productive actions - even at a modest domestic level, because the collective energy will amount to something more than we started with and perhaps put us less at the mercy of those above our heads.
Through no effort of our own, we received the geopolitical jackpot of being born in the U.S.A. If we are walking behind the victory elephant instead of riding it, we have no one else to blame.
